What goes with what ? - a guide to shoes, socks, ties and accessories for young men, students and late teens

Sometimes you get up in the morning and just wish that someone had laid out the clothes you're supposed to wear for the day. For those unlucky souls without a wife or girlfriend or mother on hand to do this for them, or at least cast an approving eye over an outfit choice, it can be tricky to know what goes with what.

How can you navigate the rocky waters of colour blocking without straying into catastrophic clashing territory? When has a sartorial fashion choice strayed into crazy person who got dressed in the dark? How do you know if it all goes or whether you're acting your age?

The days of having to adhere to not wearing brown shoes with black trousers are long gone. If you are wearing a well-made brand that you believe in the aesthetic of, you can't go far wrong. 21st century dressing relies on good tailoring and authentic design; don't be afraid to mix patterns or create a kaleidoscope of colours with your outfit.

Firstly you need to find a brand that you like. Ideally, this should be a fashion forward clothing range with a unique and modern style. Brands such as ASOS, or Humor, who hail from Denmark and take inspiration from electronic music, are at the forefront of such style revolutions.

Once you've picked your clothing range, you will find that they have some classic key pieces and some accessories, all of which are designed to make your wardrobe as interchangeable, versatile and flexible as possible. From here you will be able to mix and match items to create a range of looks.

A pair of jeans with a purposefully tailored drop crotch can be paired with a check shirt buttoned up to the chin, bare feet with daps and a stripy woollen beanie hat. This same beanie could be worn the next day with a hoody, t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops for a more casual affair. That same t-shirt could be coupled with a long-sleeved cotton shirt left open over the top and some classic chinos for a night out.

Stock your wardrobe with a base of key items like jeans, t-shirts and sweatshirts and then gradually add accessories such as hats, jackets, scarves and belts over time to suit your needs and purposes. If you think you're getting bored of the clothes you have, try combining different elements that you might not usually wear together.

Make sure you have got key pieces in your wardrobe that you can use as base items to mix and match with. Try picking up something in the Humor jeans sale from which you can create different looks for different occasions. You'll find that once you get started, everything else just links together.
